Abé Restaurant Review: Good Food for Good Friends at Abé

I like the idea of dining family style or what I call the “salu-salo factor”. This was a consideration in picking a restaurant when a couple of our friends from Singapore visited. That and, of course, they should serve Filipino food.

So we came upon Abé near the entertainment block of SM Mall of Asia. The catchphrase “Where good friends dine” spoke to us. Hehe!

Interiors and Service

Abé’s contemporary interiors are highlighted by splashes of color on the walls, which are adorned by black and white photos (I presume) of Mr. Emilio Aguilar Cruz, whose nickname is the restaurant’s namesake.

You have the option to dine alfresco at the veranda with a view of Manila Bay or inside at the main dining area. We opted for the air-conditioned comfort of dining inside. The main dining area can accommodate up to 80 people. Abé’s staff are consistent in immediately clearing the mess left by diners, making sure to keep the small space clean.

Abé’s wait staff are courteous and attentive. Menus and cold water were provided as soon as we’re seated.


Surprisingly, the food didn’t take that long to be prepared. Whenever I dine at a proper restaurant, I expect to wait no less than 15 minutes for the food to be served. It took much shorter than that at Abé.

We ordered Liempo Hamonado (Php 370), Manuk sa Luyang Dilaw (Php 350), Laing with Tinapa (Php 255) and Sikreto ni Maria (Php 165) for dessert.

Abé’s Liempo Hamonado is my favorite among the bunch. The charred, smoky, sweet and savory flavors come together nicely. All that in a tender meat that require little to no effort to pull apart.

A Pinoy version of chicken curry, Abé’s Manuk sa Luyang Dilaw is super creamy. The portions left us wanting though.

Despite being Bicolano, it is only in recent days that I found an appreciation for Laing (taro leaves cooked in coconut milk). Abé’s version of this Bicolano classic was able to beautifully marry the creaminess of gata (coconut  milk) and the smokiness of tinapa (smoked fish).

So what is Maria’s secret? Hidden under the layers of vanilla ice cream and slices of mango are suman. There’s nothing out of the ordinary with this dessert, it tasted okay.

Final Thoughts

Capampangans have been dubbed many times as one of the best cooks in the Philippines. Dining at Abé substantiates this appellation.

Food is really good at Abé. The servings are decent given the price. The only thing that got a bit of frown was the dessert, though it was okay, I think it was a bit steeply priced. Such a creative name like Sikreto ni Maria deserves something more… surprising.

Service is also on the positive note. The way the restaurant is kept clean and the pro-activeness of Abé’s wait staff makes a lot of difference.

All in all, it was a favorable experience worthy of recommendation and subsequent visits.

    Not surprised that you found the liempo great. I believe if there's one ingredient that Kapampangan cuisine has mastered well, it's pork. Nice recommendation though :D
